- Tuesday January 31, 6:00pm to 8:00pm
- Black Gold (short): This animated short employs hand-drawn animation layered over stop-motion sequences of moving ink on drumskins to create a striking, mournful portrait of the Alberta tar sands.
- The Chocolate Farmer (documentary):This full-length documentary takes us to an unspoiled corner of southern Belize, where cacao farmer and father Eladio Pop manually works his plantation in the tradition of his Mayan ancestors: as a steward of the land. The film captures a year in the life of the Pop family as they struggle to preserve their values in a world that is dramatically changing around them. A lament for cultures lost, The Chocolate Farmer challenges our deeply held assumptions of progress.

Art Exhibit - NEW 01/1/2012
In cooperation with the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre in Medicine Hat, the Brooks Public Library is proud to present The Gallery, a series of rotating collections of art that are displayed in the library and available for public viewing.
January's Exhibit: Growing Up
The exhibition Growing Up presents the work of three Edmonton-based illustrative artists whose artwork reflects on their personal childhood memories. While some of these works are 'laugh-out-loud' and others bitter-sweet, all invite the viewer into the artists' lives and allow viewers to reflect on their own histories. Although the works in the exhibition are in different mediums and styles, the artists are unified in their approach to art-making; for them a picture begins with a story. Though each work is a complete story on its own, together the paintings are like the pages of a book, leading the viewer from the 'beginning' to the 'end' and demonstrating that the process of 'growing up' is a never-ending one.
Growing Up features the work of Crystal Driedger, Davey Thompson and Amanda Woodward.
