Public Computers and Internet Access The Brooks Public Library has five computers available for public use. Each of these computers provides access to Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and the Internet. Black-and-white print-outs can be made from the public access computers for a charge of $0.25 per page. These computers are available to the public as part of the Community Access Program (CAP), an Industry Canada initiative. Created to give Canadians affordable public access to the Internet, CAP provides communities across Canada such as Brooks, with funding to aid them in establishing and operating public Internet sites, termed "CAP Sites."
The Brooks Public Library also offers wireless internet access during the library's opening hours.
Bookmyne is a free iPhone application. With Bookmyne, you can find a participating local library via the iPhone's GPS. You can then search the library's catalogue, renew checked out items, place and cancel hold requests, check your library card account details, and navigate to your library's home page. The Shortgrass Library System, including the Brooks Public Library, is amongst the first Canadian libraries to join. We are very excited to bring cutting-edge technology, like BookMyne, to our patrons! In order to install BookMyne on your iPhone, patrons will need a library card #, and PIN #. Please click here for more information. Equipment Rentals and the Brooks Bulletin on Microfilm Overhead projectors and screens are available for rent. Genealogical resources, 2 microfiche readers and 2 microfilm readers are available for public use at no charge. We have issues of the Brooks Bulletin on microfilm dating from 1912 to 2005. The Brooks Public Library Meeting Room is available to groups and organizations who wish to rent it. A circulating collection of books in a variety of languages are available at the library. Patrons can also request books of different languages through the interlibary loan process. One of the collections at the Brooks Library that is of great interest to our patrons is the Scammell Collection. This collection of books was made possible by freelance writer, photographer and lecturer, Robert Scammell. Our Scammell Collection of wildlife books is becoming well known to many outdoorsmen. There is a great selection of wildlife books, as well as books on big game, fishing, fly-tying and gun repair, just to name a few. These books may be taken out of the library for a lending period of three weeks. Videos, DVDs, and Music Recordings The library has a selection of children's films, family films, educational films, travelogues, old movie classics and Shakespearean plays for loan on video and DVD. Country, rock, jazz, popular, folk, classical, inspirational and children's music, as well as audiobooks are also available on both audio cassette and compact disc for your listening pleasure. Photocopying and LaminatingThe library will photocopy documents in black-and-white at a cost of $0.25 per page. The library will also laminate posters and documents at a cost of $0.50 an inch. All materials in the Shortgrass database are available to patrons within the system free of charge. We have a twice weekly van service to ensure prompt delivery. Materials can be obtained from outside the system through interlibrary loans. Children's Toddler Time and Story Time programs, lunchbox talks, class tours, and author visits are just a few of the many exciting programs the Brooks Public Library has to offer.
