Public Computers and Internet Access

The Brooks Public Library has five computers available for public use. Each of these computers provides access to Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and the Internet. Black-and-white print-outs can be made from the public access computers for a charge of $0.25 per page.

These computers are available to the public as part of the Community Access Program (CAP), an Industry Canada initiative. Created to give Canadians affordable public access to the Internet, CAP provides communities across Canada such as Brooks, with funding to aid them in establishing and operating public Internet sites, termed "CAP Sites."

Equipment Rentals and the Brooks Bulletin on Microfilm

8mm and 16mm projectors, screens, and overhead projectors are available for rent. Genealogical resources, 2 microfiche readers and 2 microfilm readers are available for public use at no charge. We have issues of the Brooks Bulletin on microfilm dating from 1912 to 2005. In addition to having the Brooks Bulletin on microfilm, we also have many historical photos of the area , as well as several genealogical resources courtesy of the Genealogical Society.

Multilingual Books

A circulating collection of books in a variety of languages are available at the library. Patrons can also request books of different languages through the interlibary loan process.

Scammell Collection

One of the collections at the Brooks Library that is of great interest to our patrons is the Scammell Collection. This collection of books was made possible by freelance writer, photographer and lecturer, Robert Scammell.

Our Scammell Collection of wildlife books is becoming well known to many outdoorsmen. There is a great selection of wildlife books, as well as books on big game, fishing, fly-tying and gun repair, just to name a few. These books may be taken out of the library for a lending period of three weeks.

Videos, DVDs, and Music Recordings

The library has a selection of children's films, family films, educational films, travelogues, old movie classics and Shakespearean plays for loan on video and DVD. Country, rock, jazz, popular, folk, classical, inspirational and children's music, as well as audiobooks are also available on both audio cassette and compact disc for your listening pleasure.

Photocopying and Laminating

The library will photocopy documents in black-and-white at a cost of $0.25 per page. The library will also laminate posters and documents at a cost of $0.50 an inch. We will also laminate business cards at a cost of $1.50 each. We are not able to laminate anything which exceeds a width of 24 inches.

Interlibrary Loans

All materials in the Shortgrass database are available to patrons within the system free of charge. We have a twice weekly van service to ensure prompt delivery. Materials can be obtained from outside the system through interlibrary loans.

Library Programs

Children's Toddler Time and Story Time programs, lunchbox talks, class tours, and author visits are just a few of the many exciting programs the Brooks Public Library has to offer. For more information regarding our programs, please check out the Events Page or give us a call at 362-2947.

Services for the Visually Impaired and the Homebound

A circulating block collection of CNIB talking books and large print books are available to the visually impaired upon request. We also offer a book delivery service, upon request, to those who are unable to leave their homes.

Outreach

The Brooks Public Library is working with Seniors Outreach to bring the library to your home. If you are interested, please phone Bessie at the library. The phone number is 362-2947. She will then visit you in your home and get acquainted with you and your reading preferences. We will then call Seniors Outreach who will line up a volunteer to deliver materials to your home.
