The Lois Hole Library Legacy Program

Are you looking for a meaningful gift? Why not invest in the future of Alberta by presenting a legacy donation to your local public library? Your donation will help make a difference in your community and it will also be acknowledged as a lasting legacy in your own name or in the name of a friend, family, or organization that you choose to honour.

Your donation will be used to maintain the currency of the public library's collections and to keep pace with the constantly changing information needs of readers. Suggest subjects that are appropriate to you or to those whom you wish to honour, and explore the current collection needs of your library. A bookplate will be affixed in each donated volume that will bear the name of the donor or honoree, thus forming a legacy. An acknowledgement will also be sent to those in whose honour a donation is made, or - in the case of memorial donations - to their families.

The Brooks Public Library is proud to support this wonderful program. Please contact the library at 362-2947 for more information or to discuss the possibility of making a donation on your own behalf or as a recognition or memorial gift. You may also enquire about other forms of legacy gifts such as bequests, named endowments, and trusts.

Adopt-A-Magazine

The "Adopt-A-Magazine" fundraising program allows the Brooks Public Library to subscribe to a wide range of magazines for the reading pleasure of our patrons. Many individuals and businesses have already "adopted" a magazine of their own.

A $100.00 donation will pay for the subscription to a magazine of your choice, and an advertisement for your company will be placed on the protective dura-lex cover of the magazine you have requested. Please come into the library and view our periodicals to see if there is one that may be of particular interest to you or your company.

If you are interested in supporting this venture or would like more information, please feel free to give us a call. Please click here to get a list of magazines that may be adopted through Brooks Public Library.

Brooks Friends of the Library Society

Are you looking for a way to get involved with the Brooks Public Library? The Brooks Friends of the Library Society formed in 2009 and is always looking for volunteers to help out with various activities! The purpose of this society is to raise funds for different library needs.

If you would like to join the Brooks Friends of the Library or have other fundraising ideas, please come in and see the Head Librarian or e-mail brooksfriendsofthelibrary@gmail.com.

The Brooks Public Library Foundation: A History

The Brooks Friends of the Library Society was created in 2009. Prior to its formation, The Brooks Library Foundation was the fundraising arm of the Brooks Public Library. Unfortunately, it folded in 2005 after several years of service.

In 1988 Clive Schaupmeyer established the Foundation with five others, Willie Schaupmeyer, Rick Pepper, Tom Krahn and Rev. Jim Hamilton to raise funds for expansion of the library facility. At this point in time, the Library was located in the Town’s Civic Building, downtown Brooks. With the increase in library membership and the Town’s population, expansion of the Library became necessary. The Town demonstrated support as it provided the first funds to the project by matching a Community Recreation and Cultural grant of $28,000.

As part of the fundraising efforts, the Foundation organized a book auction. More than 40 autographed books by various well know Canadian authors were received for the fundraiser held on Nov. 4, 1989 at the Elk’s Hall. In 1991 another fundraiser was organized by the Foundation; a reception and dinner with Canadian author, W.O. Mitchell as the guest speaker. In total the Foundation raised over $500,000 for the library’s move into the current facility, $120,000 of which came directly from the community. Literally hundreds of hours were also contributed by Foundation members to the establishment of the Library in its present home.

Since the establishment of the Foundation, members of this organization have endeavored to raise funds for special projects including a burglar alarm and book security system, as well as furniture and computer equipment for the Library. On April 7, 1995, the Foundation held its first "Death By Chocolate" in the old library space at the Town Civic Building. This was an annual community event held in the spring of each year for the purpose of raising funds for purchases the Library was otherwise unable to make.

Do you see something the library is missing? Please call the library and speak to our head librarian at 362-2947.
